Abstract
Background/Aims: We aimed to evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics and the long-term outcome of patients with extra-gastric MALT lymphoma in respect to various treatment modalities.

Methods: We retrospectively studied 59 patients (29 males and 30 females) aged 19 to 79 years who had extra-gastric MALT lymphoma that were diagnosed at the Seoul National University Hospital between January 1996 and January 2006.

Results: Commonly involved sites were ocular adnexa (62.7%), lung (10.2%), and intestine (8.5%). Histopathologically, low to high grade ratio was 54:5. Among 48 patients who were staged, 30 (62.5%) had localized disease (stage IE or IIE) and 18 (37.5%) showed stage IV. Bone marrow involvement was observed in 3 cases. In localized-stage, complete remission (CR) was achieved in 90.0% (27/30). Among eighteen patients with stage IV, CR was obtained in 15 (83.3%) and 2 (11.1%) showed progression. The duration of median follow-up was 44 months and 11 patients with CR relapsed after 12 to 104 months. The estimated 5-year survival rate was 85.0%.

Conclusions: Although we found that the tendency to progress or relapse seemed to be more frequent in extra-gastric MALT lymphomas than gastric MALT lymphomas, majority of our cases had low-grade, good treatment response and good long-term prognosis.
